Meshack Mavuso is playing ex-convictturned-law student Kero in Isithembiso (2017-current) but being the good guy is nothing new to him. He played student Javas on acclaimed youth drama Yizo Yizo (1999-2002) and became a household name as nice-guy geologist Vusi on Isidingo (1998- current) until leaving in 2011. Fans can also spot him as record exec Lungile on Rhythm City (2007-current) and the 40-year-old says that “they’re great roles but it’s not easy getting into character. I take a lot of time getting mentally prepared so that I stay true to each character”.

What makes Kero different? He’s a humble and unpredictable guy. Kero went from being in a gang to being an inspiring figure to the community youth. Serving in jail taught him to appreciate the important things in life, like family and looking forward to a brighter future. What drives him? Kero is terrified of going back to prison. He’ll do anything to stay away from his past, like joining his dodgy friend Banzi (Hamilton Dlamini) who’s the leader of a dangerous gang. But he can’t be all good, given his history? Of course he can [Laughs]. Look, Kero thinks every move through and he is planning to get back at Banzi for marrying the love of his life Claudia (Chichi Letswalo) while he was locked up… How do you manage your two roles? It’s difficult wearing two hats but I’ve been doing it for the past 25 years. It takes preparation and a good manager who keeps me on my toes [Laughs]. Does that leave time for anything else? I hang out with my pals Mduduzi Mabaso [Suffo on Rhythm City] and Zakhele Mabasa [Skhaleni on Isibaya] in my hometown Alexandra Township. I’m a homebody [Laughs]. NB! See p34.
