Melanie Du Bois is no stranger to the smallscreen, but playing make-up artist Zee on comedy Soap On A Rope (2017current) is a change of pace for the 42year-old, who played fashion designer and businesswoman Felicity on 7de Laan (2000-current) until mid-2016. Gone are the trendy outfits, replaced by a far more relaxed, toned-down appearance.

Zee is polar opposites from Felicity… I was tired of playing the goody-two shoes and I wanted to step into a new character, which is why Zee was perfect. She’s refreshing to play and I was given so much creative freedom to make the character as interesting as possible. How did you prepare for your new role? Zee is the make-up artist on Hard Copy [the soap on show-within-a-show Soap On A Rope] and I had to spend a lot of time in the make-up room learning techniques and tricks. Make-up artists are a big part of every film crew – they bring characters to life with their vision. What was your reaction to filming 13 episodes in 13 days? [Laughs] At first I didn’t think that it was possible but everything moved along swiftly. The directors were supportive and gave guidance throughout filming. It was fun, with pressure. There are a lot of people in the show from other soaps. That must’ve been interesting? For a big ensemble cast, everyone got along and there weren’t divas or clashing egos. It was humble and that’s why I’d do it again in an instant. Apart from entertainment, what else are you working on? I’m working on a business outside the industry and we’re in the process of getting the necessary licensing, so I can’t say too much at this stage. What I can say is that it’s in buying and selling.

Melanie in her 7de Laan days.
