Whispers have reached the Langa kids Chumani (Ayanda Daweti) and sister Xoli (Sivenathi Mabuya) back in Bisho in the Eastern Cape. And alarm bells ring when their mom Boniswa (Lusanda Mbane) returns tightlipped after visiting their dad Siseko (Hlomla Dandala). “She doesn’t explain, but we see that our mom is not feeling well; she’s not happy,” reveals Ayanda. “So we go to Joburg to find out what has happened.” But Siseko’s confession about his affair with Yvonne Thebe (Kgomotso Christopher) on Friday 26 May will divide his family.
Xoli confronts Yvonne on Monday 29 May. “Her relationship with her father is already strained because he hasn’t really been there for them,” explains Sivenathi. “This is the last straw, knowing that he betrayed their mother and their trust. She believes her mother to be a typical Xhosa woman – cultured and respectable. Yvonne is completely different and that changes her perspective of who her father is.” Xoli’s attack on Yvonne is not just about her own pain though. “It’s about fighting for her mother’s dignity and her family’s image,” says Sivenathi. And she’s deeply hurt by what she sees as her brother siding with her father. “She feels as if he’s picking the wrong side. She feels as if she is the only sane person in this entire situation!”
But Ayanda explains that there’s more at play than Xoli sees. “Chumani is not as quick to react as his sister. He listens, not jumping to conclusions. He looks up to his father. He never thought of him this way.” Chumani also has an eye to his own future. “He wants to understand because maybe as a man, he’ll also go through similar challenges and if he understands, maybe he can overcome them,” explains Ayanda. “It’s not only the cheating. He finds out in Joburg that his dad’s been involved in some illegal machinations. He has to look into this because he knows that our father wouldn’t do such a thing…”
