When Obakeng (Anga Makubalo) left The Deep in March this year, he was recovering from being kidnapped and tortured in a crime job gone wrong. He had post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and his mom Nina and grampa Georgie (Khabonina Qubeka and Darlington Michaels) sent him to a quiet village in KwaZulu-Natal where he could be treated by a traditional healer. And it seems that magic’s been worked on Wednesday 14 June when Obakeng and Georgie return.

HOME SWEET HOME

But nobody’s sure what to expect from the young man. When he left, he was suffering night terrors, fighting imaginary enemies in the shebeen and other PTSD issues. That explains the awkward reception, reveals Anga. “Everyone is welcoming but nervous. But they soon see that he is his comfortable playboy self.” Nina’s there, as is his pregnant girlfriend Kamo (Makgotso M). And Kamo’s getting all of Oba’s attention. “Emotionally he is fine right now,” says Anga. “Obakeng is determined to work hard and have a good family with Kamo and their as-yet-unborn child.”

BABY STEPS

Part of Obakeng’s healing has been building a bond with Georgie, whom he didn’t know when he first moved into The Deep in 2016. “They didn’t connect because of their circumstances, Obakeng being adopted and Papa G being who he is,” says Anga, who adds that the rejuvenated relationship has done wonders for his character. “He’s closer to Georgie when they return and they can work closely together, especially on their [criminal] business. That doesn’t mean his love-hate relationship with his mom has changed [Laughs].”

LIFE OF CRIME

Having peace in mind has given Oba and Kamo the peace of mind that they need ahead of parenthood too. “Time away has definitely helped him reflect. He’s a lot calmer and responsible when it comes to being a father to his child,” says Anga. Obakeng’s got one eye on the family business and the other on his child’s future and on Monday 19 June, “He wants to get into serious but risky business with Papa G,” says the actor. “[Former miner] Obakeng is focussed on making good money to set up a trust fund for his baby.” Seems Oba has already forgotten what the last bit of risky business did to him…

Obakeng is all smiles when he returns. Bonding with Georgie has helped Obakeng heal.
