Nikiwe (Linda Sokhulu) needs a break from her world, starting right now. Her career is in freefall after Sibeko Gold merged with Haines International in May and her lovelife isn’t much better – she’s dating The Deep’s wheeler dealer Gabriel (Aubrey Poo). “It’s a tumultuous relationship built out of need for affection,” says Linda. “It started as a rebellion against her CEO dad Lincoln Sibeko (Lindani Nkosi) in December 2016. It became a dependency. The cracks are opening now – perhaps she should’ve listened to everyone’s warnings…
Gabriel started off as the new pastor in Horizon Deep when he moved in in mid 2015 and he ruffled feathers, as former headwriter Rohan Dickson said at the time. “Gabriel is charismatic and smart and articulate. He’s not a villain. He’s a soap character telling a story that happens to be set in the church because he’s a pastor, but he could quite easily have been a policeman.” By January this year, Gabriel had manipulated Nikiwe into dating him and it’s got so bad now that she walks out on him on Monday 12 June. She asks her business partner Benjamin (Arno Marais) to help get to New York and then Amsterdam. Thanks to some clever time-lapsing, Nikiwe is already in New York when she contacts Gabriel online today, Tuesday 13 June.
Gabriel apologises but Nikiwe isn’t prepared to come home to him. And he isn’t ready to give up on his source of economic freedom – the Sibekos’ deep pockets and gold mines – but it seems that he might not have to worry about being without “his true love”. After a bout of throwing up and nausea in the mornings, Nikiwe fears on Monday 19 June that she’s carrying Gabriel’s baby. “If she is… it may be too much for her,” hints Linda. NB! See more on p17.
