Greek & loving it
The Durrells are trading southern England for the Greek island of Corfu.
The Durrells Season 1 Sundays (from 11 June) BBC First (*119) 20:00
The family is in trouble in biographical drama series The Durrells (2016- current). Papa Durrell died years ago and while she tried to keep her family fed, clothed and under a roof, widow Louisa Durrell (Keeley Hawes, Queen Elizabeth in The Hollow Crown, 2012- current) hasn’t had much luck. Her solution? Packing up and moving her four kids to the Mediterranean island of Corfu. “Being a mother is what gets her up in the morning,” says Keeley. “She’s a good mother, not a perfect mother, but she’s always striving.”
It’s based on late British naturalist Gerald Durrell and his family, who moved to Corfu in 1935. And it’s not just where he grew up, “It’s where eccentric family affairs were interwoven with Gerry’s discovery of the natural world that inspired his life’s work to rescue animals from the brink of extinction,” says his widow Lee.
MEET & GREET
1 Lawrence aka Larry (Josh O’Connor, James in period drama Peaky Blinders, 2014- current) is the eldest Durrell child, an aspiring writer and a hopeless estate agent.
Lugaretzia (Anna Savva) is the 2 family’s hypochondriac domestic helper who is dirt cheap – perfect for their current financial situation.
Margo (Daisy Waterstone, Katie 3 in season 17 of drama Silent Witness, 1996- current) is a typical teen – she wants to tan and likes boys.
Leslie (Callum Woodhouse) is the 4 middle child and shoots anything that moves with his gun.
Gerald aka Gerry (Milo Parker, 5 Roger in thriller film Mr Holmes, 2015) is the youngest child and finds his love for nature on the island.
Louisa (Keeley Hawes) is the mom 6 who’s trying to give her family a new life and find herself again.
GAY BE GONE
The show was slammed for changing a character’s orientation from gay to straight. Production company ITV defended its decision by saying that “it is loosely based on Gerald’s life and is not intended to be true to life”.
