Iconic kiddies claymation series Wallace & Gromit (1990-current) bid farewell to voiceover artist Peter Sallis in June when he passed away aged 96. He gave dog-owner Wallace his voice from 1990 until retiring in 2010, and before that, Peter appeared in all 295 episodes of British sitcom Last Of The Summer Wine (1973-2010).

Fans of Days Of Our Lives (1965current, see p29) will be delighted to hear that Will Horton (Chandler Massey) is being resurrected. But he’s dead – so what gives? Will was strangled to death in 2015 when Chandler didn’t renew his contract and the producers have realised that not recasting the role was a bad idea. There’s no news on how Will will return, but he posted a pic of a Days coffee cup to his Instagram social media account @therealmassey with the caption “I’m back”. SA viewers should see him in 2020 as we’re three years behind the US.

Sam Esmail, the creator of thriller drama series Mr Robot (2015-current), has revealed his new TV project: Homecoming. It’s based on a fictional podcast about secret government agents who want to turn their backs on spy-work and return to being normal civilians. Sam is eyeing film star Julia Roberts as his lead, but he will need to snap her up quickly now that Julia is joining the flood of movie stars working on television – she’s set to star in comedy series Today Will Be Different, which is based on Maria Temple’s 2016 novel of the same name.

We weren’t joking when we told you in our 7 June tvplus that the world of soapies was like a game of musical chairs. Linsey Godfrey (Caroline Spencer in Bold & Beautiful, 1987- current; see p28) had quit the show and two weeks later she’s done a U-turn. The actress posted this photo to her Instagram account (@ohmygodfrey) – it’s her on the Bold set. Since the show is super-secret with storylines, it’ll be a month until we know how they’ve worked Caroline back into the action and slightly longer until we see her onscreen in SA – we’re about 15 months behind US broadcasts. Archie comicthemed drama Riverdale (2017current) left season 1 with serious cliffhangers. Season 2 is expected to be airing in December 2017 and the rumours point towards a bigger role for Southside Serpent biker boss FP Jones (Skeet Ulrich). Exec producer Sarah Schecter says that “we could not imagine having Riverdale without him. Skeet is a stellar actor and we have scratched the surface of who FP is”. Season 2 will also be adding Mark Consuelos (Mateo Santos on soapie All My Children, 1970-2011) to the cast as Hiram Lodge, who’d only been spoken about in season 1.

Batman fans can expect a little more chaos coming to town when season 3 of Gotham (2014-current) comes to a close. The Batman prequel series is throwing villain Harley Quinn into the mix but there is a question about who’ll take on the role made famous by Margot Robbie in 2016 action movie Suicide Squad. Erin Richards, who’s played Barbara Kean since episode 1, hinted that a major change is coming for her character, adding that “Harley Quinn seems to like destruction for destruction’s sake. And that’s wonderful. But I feel like Barbara has a plan. She’s a little more intellectual in her approach toward taking over the underworld”. Action show Taken (2016-current) has found its executive producer. Greg Plageman, who pulled the strings on action show Person Of Interest (20112016) will be taking over the reigns for season 2 as the show’s bosses hope to win over a bigger audience in the US. Clive Standen will be returning to his role as CIA agent Bryan Mills later this year for 16, hourlong episodes, up from the 10-episode first season.

Prison dramedy Orange Is The New Black (2013-current) might’ve already reached its peak. Season 4 has been praised as “the best yet” after season 5 (all 13 episodes were available on 9 June) has been criticised for being “too slow”. The season covers three days inside Litchfield Prison and critics have said that it’s “painful” to watch.

Riverdale’s Skeet Ulrich as FP Jones.

Wallace and his dog Gromit.

Linsey Godfrey is returning to Bold.
