A bestie to the rescue
Thobile goes the extra mile and fakes being GC’s girlfriend when his parents pop in unannounced.

Hairstylist GC and salon boss Thobile (Khaya Dladla and Nokuthula Mabika) know each other inside out after four years working together. So it’s obvious that something is up with GC on Friday 7 July and Thobile prods for answers. “GC is acting weird, very upright and not himself,” laughs Nokuthula. His controlling parents Bhomu and MaXimba (Mduduzi Nombela and Mabel Mthombeni) arrive to KwaMashu on Friday 7 July and the news isn’t good. “He’s going crazy,” hints Nojuthula. “They’re plan-ning to send him to their rural village to marry the royal princess.” Yip, they still don’t that he’s gay “but he’d rather suffer in silence than tell his parents – and he doesn’t want anyone blowing his cover,” adds Nokuthula.
TRUTH HURTS
Thobile and their pal Sma (Sihle Ndaba) are stunned by flamboyant GC’s masculine overhaul on Monday 10 July but they agree to help sell his lie. He’s also put his wedding plans with fiancé Jojo (Siphesihle Cele) on hold, only to have his parents ask if his “friend” Jojo will be his best man. “Jojo loses it and he orders GC to tell his parents the truth about their romance,” says Nokuthula, “but GC can’t disappoint them.” With GC’s mind made up, Jojo dumps him on Tuesday 11 July. Jojo returned to win GC’s heart in early June 2017 and after living in the closet himself, he doesn’t want to be forced back into the dark. “Jojo wants GC to stand up for their love. He hopes that this break-up will open his fiancé’s eyes to tell the world their truth.”
THE LYING GAME
Jojo’s going to have to wait – GC puts a ring on Thobile’s finger on Wednesday 12 July and asks her to be his fake fiancée. “She knows that this lie is difficult but she will do anything to support GC in his time of need,” says Nokuthula. Thobile gets into character to meet her “in-laws” on Thursday 13 July but they don’t like her! “GC’s family think that she’s ‘ghetto’. They’re from a different world, but that’s not a problem,” hints Nokuthula. Thobile says that she’s pregnant to win them over but that lie leads to a problem on Monday 17 July – GC and Thobile are told to plan their wedding… in his village. “Poor GC,” adds Nokuthula, “that same day he finds a letter from Jojo. He’s left to let GC ‘get on with his wedding’. Will GC lose the love of his life for a lie? “Maybe…” teases Nokuthula. “Maybe not.”
