Toni Collette’s character Ellen Sanders is in a tight spot in single-season drama show Hostages (2013-2014). Ellen must operate on the US President and make sure that he doesn’t survive his tricky surgery, despite her being the best in the world. If she fails, a group of hostage takers will kill her family. “I don’t know if I would be as strong as Ellen,” says the 44-year-old Aussie actress, who admits that she’s terrified of spiders, let alone armed gunmen.
Her real name is Toni Collett but she added the “e” to her surname to differentiate her from the famous Aussie wedding official Toni Collett.
She started acting as an 11-year-old, faking appendicitis to get out of school. “But I was so good that our family doctor operated and was confused when he found a health appendix in me,” she laughs.
Toni married her musician hubby Dave Galafassi in 2003 (they have a folk band called Toni Collette & The Finish) and had daughter Sage Florence in 2008 and son Arlo Robert in 2011.
Having Sage inspired Toni to write children’s bedtime book Planet Yawn in 2008 about a selfish boy.
She was lined up to play Bridget in the Bridget Jones films (2001current) made famous by Renée Zellweger. Instead, Toni was performing in Broadway play The Wild Party and playing Queenie in the play earned her a Tony Award nomination.
Her Instagram account @toni_ colletteofficial is full of touristy photos as well as behind-the-scenes snaps from her job… “And the odd photo where I’m starstruck,” laughs the actress. “Like the one with singer Rod Stewart. I didn’t know what to say!”
