Toni Col­lette’s char­ac­ter Ellen San­ders is in a tight spot in sin­gle-sea­son drama show Hostages (2013-2014). Ellen must op­er­ate on the US Pres­i­dent and make sure that he doesn’t sur­vive his tricky surgery, de­spite her be­ing the best in the world. If she fails, a group of hostage tak­ers will kill her fam­ily. “I don’t know if I would be as strong as Ellen,” says the 44-year-old Aussie ac­tress, who ad­mits that she’s ter­ri­fied of spi­ders, let alone armed gun­men.

1 Her real name is Toni Col­lett but she added the “e” to her sur­name to dif­fer­en­ti­ate her from the fa­mous Aussie wed­ding of­fi­cial Toni Col­lett.

2 She started act­ing as an 11-year-old, fak­ing ap­pen­dici­tis to get out of school. “But I was so good that our fam­ily doc­tor oper­ated and was con­fused when he found a health ap­pen­dix in me,” she laughs.

3 Toni mar­ried her mu­si­cian hubby Dave Galafassi in 2003 (they have a folk band called Toni Col­lette & The Fin­ish) and had daugh­ter Sage Florence in 2008 and son Arlo Robert in 2011.

4 Hav­ing Sage in­spired Toni to write chil­dren’s bed­time book Planet Yawn in 2008 about a self­ish boy.

5 She was lined up to play Brid­get in the Brid­get Jones films (2001cur­rent) made fa­mous by Renée Zell­weger. In­stead, Toni was per­form­ing in Broad­way play The Wild Party and play­ing Quee­nie in the play earned her a Tony Award nom­i­na­tion.

6 Her In­sta­gram ac­count @toni_ col­let­te­of­fi­cial is full of touristy photos as well as behind-the-scenes snaps from her job… “And the odd photo where I’m starstruck,” laughs the ac­tress. “Like the one with singer Rod Ste­wart. I didn’t know what to say!”
