Culinary student Katlego (Patrick Seleka) is ready to put on his bigboy pants and enter the adult world. He wants to move out of his family home on Wednesday 19 July and live with his friend Mapitsi (Mogau Paulina Motlhatswi), but his meddling grandma Koko Mantsha (Lydia Mokgokoloshi) isn’t ready to cut the cord. “Koko still sees Katlego as her ‘little baby’,” laughs Patrick. And Koko isn’t afraid of emotional blackmail – she fakes a sad face to manipulate Kat to stay. She raised him as her own when his impulsive mom Charity (Makgofe Moagi) left him as a baby and “Koko is worried that Kat will lose his good manners without her supervision. But he wants to leave and be independent,” says Patrick.
LET ME LIVE
On Friday 21 July, Koko instructs her daughter Charity to talk Katlego into staying but “Charity isn’t having it. No one loves their freedom like Charity and she wants her son to experience that too,” adds Patrick. While Charity understands that this is a big change for Koko – and Kat – she comforts Koko by getting her to understand that Katlego will maintain his responsible ways. But Kat’s gran isn’t the only one unsettled with the move…
Later on Friday 21 July, Kat’s friend Tbose (Cornet Mamabolo) visits his babymama Mapitsi in the hopes of keeping Katlego away. “Tbose thinks that Kat is breaking the bro- code. Tbose even tries to get Mapitsi to give him a second chance at love, but she doesn’t want anything romantic at the moment,” says Patrick. Although Mapitsi and Katlego are ex-lovers and broke off their romance in October 2013, they remained good friends. “Tbose doesn’t understand. He thinks that Katlego is taking his girl [despite them having been broken up even longer than Kat and Mapitsi],” says Patrick. “But it isn’t so – Katlego just wants somewhere to stay and Mapitsi’s place is perfect for him.”
CATCH A BREAK
Katlego meanwhile prays for a miracle on Monday 24 July. And that prayer might’ve been answered. “Koko takes a deep breath and realises that she’s fighting a losing battle. Kat needs time to grow,” says Patrick. But like Tbose, part of [Kat’s girlfriend] Candice (Liza van Deventer) is jealous of his bond with Mapitsi but she hides her concerns from her boyfriend and doesn’t say a thing on Wednesday 26 July. “Katlego doesn’t notice that Candice is unsettled. He only has eyes for Candice and like Koko, she will have to trust Kat,” says Patrick.
THE BIG MOVE
Katlego is excited about this new chapter Tuesday 1 August when he moves out of Koko’s house. “It is an amazing feeling! Kat is a mature guy and he needs to see what’s on the other side of life,” says Patrick, who adds that his character has proven himself to be a dependable young man and he should get the chance to live away from home like his varsity pals Kwaito (Clement Maosa) and Tbose, who he’s envied for some time. “Katlego can take care of himself. He has got an old soul. Living with Koko has taught him about responsibility and now it’s time for him to put those life lessons into use,” says Patrick.
