Poldark Season 3 Tuesdays (from 8 August) ITV Choice (*123) 20:00

Soldier-turned-mine boss Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner) sets sails for France as season 3 of period drama Poldark (2015- current) arrives on our shores. He’s playing soldier again, this time on a rescue mission during the 1794 French Revolution. “We filmed in this incredible place with a huge moat and rivers and little places where we could duck off into the woods with a musket. It was great fun,” laughs Aidan. “We had professional musket training. And the bayonets are real!”

But fun with guns ended in tears on the set, with the 34-year- old Irishman breaking his finger when it got in the way of another actor cocking his musket for a scene. “I knew that something was wrong straight away and for the next 30 seconds it felt like jelly,” Aidan says. As in this series, well-made plans go one way and life goes in another…

There’s plenty of action back home between Ross and his wife Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson) too. “We pick up with Ross mending his relationship [Demelza kicked him out after uncovering his infidelity with Elizabeth in season 2],” explains Aidan. We will also meet Demelza’s religious brothers Sam (Tom York) and Drake (Harry Richardson). “I don’t think Ross is particularly enamoured by the Methodist movement. Ross sees that they’re good-natured but he finds them dull… and they can’t drink,” jokes Aidan.

And while Ross’s other love Elizabeth (Heida Reed) is secretly having his baby this season, Ross and her husband George Warleggan (Jack Farthing) are calling a truce. “They can’t afford to do each other serious harm,” says Aidan. “For the sake of their wives and children, they have to come to an understanding.” Well, that won’t…

Ross and DemelzaXxxxx are in for a rough ride.

Demelza agreed to stay with Ross despite his affair with Elizabeth, who realised that she’s carrying his baby. And while Ross’s mines were turning a profit, he learnt that there is more to life than just money.
