Salon partners GC (Khaya Dladla) and Thobile (Nokuthula Mabika) have stuck together through everything from fake weddings to attempted murder. But GC’s tragic reaction to being disowned by his father on Tuesday 1 August and waking up to a note on his pillow after a night with his love Jojo (Siphesihle Cele) on Thursday 3 August could ruin it all. “I feel bad for GC, I feel for both of them,” says Nokuthula. “They’ve got that sibling kind of love; they’ve been each other’s shoulder through so many obstacles. It’s heart-breaking to see this pain and neither of them understand what the other is going through now.”
It’s one thing for GC to shut Thobile out, but she can’t believe her eyes when he shows up for work drunk on Friday 4 August. “She is disappointed in him and how he’s taking everything,” says Nokuthula. “And she thinks he’s enjoying the attention and now she’s over it, especially if it compromises her job and her money. When he comes to the salon drunk, he jeopardises the entire dignity of their business and their lives.”
And just when Thobile thought she’d seen the worst of it, she arrives at work on Wednesday 9 August to find that the salon’s locks have been changed. “That’s when things get crazy,” says Nokuthula. “He literally fires Thobile and chases her out. That’s the last straw for Thobile. This is war for her. It’s time to move on from GC and his drama. And she tries to convince fellow salon partner Smangele (Sihle Ndaba) to walk out of the salon with her. GC isn’t only destroying his life, he is destroying theirs and everything they tried so hard to build. Because they’re all from disadvantaged backgrounds and they’re worked so hard to be where they are.” NB! See more on p10.
