Healing hands

GC’s mother finds her voice after her son nearly loses his life.

TV Plus (South Africa) - - UZALO -

GC (Khaya Dladla) has been forced to live in a world without love after being rejected by both his lover Jojo (Siphesihle Cele) and parents Bhomu and MaXimba (Mduduzi Nombela and Mabel Mthombeni) when he refused to go through with an arranged heterosexual marriage on Tuesday 1 August. Since then, GC has lost everything – his joyful spirit, his business, his friends and his reputation. And now GC’s drunken spiral of self- destruction could cost him his life. He went missing on Tuesday 12 September after running into his violent former cellmate Mhlengi (Thandanani Mjuda Qwabe) – the lunatic who wanted to rape him. When a group of children find GC beaten, stabbed, bloodied and near death in an abandoned house on Wednesday 13 September, it’s not just the doctors who’ll be working to save his life…

When GC’s mom MaXimba gets word of what has happened to her son via Jojo and MaMlambo (Gugu Gumede), she drops everything – including a lifelong fear of her husband – and races to KwaMashu to be at her child’s side on Tuesday 19 September. “Homosexuality in South Africa is still a hugely undealtwith issue. There are so many gay kids who try to kill themselves,” explains Khaya. “I wanted to show that in another situation, you might not be able to make your wrongs right in time. I am saying correct it now – sort your issues out now while you can!”

On Monday 25 September when Bhomu tries to put his foot down in GC’s hospital room and asks his wife, “Why are you wasting time with this one?”, MaXimba finally lets him have it. “She didn’t have a voice in the family. With this story, we wanted to create a situation where she breaks out of the chains that she’s in,” explains Khaya. “The neardeath experience brings the mom back to her senses to say, ‘Bugger my husband, bugger the chief. My child is alive and I will be there for him to take care of him’.” And GC is in for an even bigger surprise when he sees how his father reacts to being roared at by his wife MaXimba on Tuesday 26 September…

“There’s an important lesson,” says actor Khaya Dladla (GC). MaXimba stands up to save her son.

Bhomu is put firmly in his place.

A badly beaten-up GC is found barely alive.
