Hold your horses, Sphe (Pearl Monama) – you aren’t getting out of your arranged marriage to businessman Mazwi (Musa Ngema) with a simple request. The troubled doctor might have demanded a split from her estranged hubby on Tuesday 12 September, “But the elders tell Sphe that there will not be a divorce,” says Pearl. “They tell her that things will ‘work out’ and that everybody will be happy.” Egotistical Mazwi doesn’t even care about his wife – he wants to keep his baby daughter Rorisang (Lethokuhle Jiyane) and Pearl adds, “This divorce is a shock to Mazwi. He isn’t going down easily though!”
Sphe has had enough and wants out, explains Pearl, adding that on Monday 18 September Mazwi calls in reinforcements. “He gets their families involved and he calls them to talk sense into Sphe.” She doesn’t appreciate being ambushed by the family members and she is more determined than ever to ditch Mazwi. “The elders tell her that ‘ this’ is not how being a Moroka works. A Moroka has dignity and respect and perseverance,” explains Pearl. And the elders aren’t willing to listen to Sphe on Tuesday 19 September. “It’s their way or the highway,” says the actress.
Sphe is no fool and she’s tried playing nice, but since that’s got her nowhere, she considers bringing out the big guns on Wednesday 20 September. “Sphe is ready to tell Mazwi that he isn’t a dad. If she tells him that Rorisang, the baby he is so devoted to, is actually his brother Smanga’s (Moopi Mothibeli) child, then Sphe will be able to walk out of the marriage,” says Pearl. That’s something the elders haven’t counted on – after all, it was their idea for Sphe to fall pregnant in mid-2016 after learning that Mazwi is infertile.
Mazwi has plans of his own and on Monday 25 September he tries to woo back his wife, whether he really wants to or not. “He doesn’t realise that he’s going overboard,” says Pearl. “Mazwi is actually frightening Sphe away but he’s also doing this to save face.” The actress adds that “Sphe knows about the battle she’s facing. The elders have told her to suck it up and isn’t going to happen quickly. She’s ready for war!”
Baby Rorisang is going to be used as a tool in any divorce. Sphe (right) is unimpressed when the elders tell her what to do with her marriage to Mazwi (blue shirt).
