Caught in the crosshairs

TV Plus (South Africa) - - THE RIVER -

In May this year, Nomonde (Linda Mtoba) left Cape Town when she learnt that her not-sobaby brother Andile (Lunga Mofokeng) ended up in hospital after a failed suicide attempt when his meddling mom Lindiwe (Sindi Dlathu) forced him to marry his wealthy girlfriend Faith (Anele Zondo) to save her mining company. And being an overprotective older sister, Nomonde is ready to pounce on her stepmom for being responsible for her brother’s near-death experience. “Nomonde is a feisty one,” laughs Linda. “She’s angry at Lindiwe for intruding in Andile’s life, as well as those around her. She wants to destroy Lindiwe’s life in the worst possible way,” adds the actress.

Where does Nomonde’s resentment towards Lindiwe stem from? Nomonde’s biological mother died when she was young and her dad Zweli (Hlomla Dandala) instantly moved on and got married to Lindiwe. While Zweli was building a new life with Lindiwe, Nomonde was raised by her maternal grandmother, so she had no chance to develop a bond with her father or siblings. Nomonde feels like an outsider and worst of all, blames Lindiwe for her “incomplete” upbringing. What is her relationship with Andile like? He’s the only one who she gets along with in the Dlamini/Dikana household. [Laughs] They are inseparable and Nomonde tries to shield him from danger because he is shy and mostly keeps to himself. You played spoilt brat Zama until April on telenovela Isibaya (2013-current) who was close to her parents. How does she compare to Nomonde? Nomonde is a dark and angry person and thinks that taking revenge on Lindiwe will make up for her complicated past – a compelling role to get into. I dig deep when I get on set and think about the conniving women on drama How To Get Away With Murder (2014- current). What’s it like working with a new cast? Working on The River has exceeded my expectations. I got a call from the producers about a character that was written just for me and I didn’t think it would be this great. I work with big names like Sindi and Hlomla who I’ve looked up to while I was growing up and watching TV.

Nomonde is ready to rumble when she arrives in Joburg.
