Instead of upgrading the school’s sports complex at the start of May like she was supposed to, Principal Thobakgale (Elizabeth Serunye) took the cash donation and invested it in a “financial sure-win” to fix her own money mess. Her plan to replace the cash before anyone noticed fell apart on Monday 21 May when co-worker Mr Manaka (Skhumbuzo Mbatha) got a hint that something was off, explains Elizabeth. It gets worse on Thursday 31 May when the investor Mr Langa (Phillip Molepo) shows up at Turfloop High demanding a progress report for the sports complex. “He’s tired of being led in circles,” warns Elizabeth.
“GIVE ME MY MONEY… BACK”
“Mr Langa isn’t dumb. He sees through her lies and hesitating and demands a cut,” sighs Elizabeth. “He asks her flatout if she’s taken the money and then he blackmails her: he wants a portion of his own donation or he’ll expose her to the Department Of Education and she’ll lose her job.” Two wrongs don’t make a right, but Principal Thobakgale strongly considers taking Mr Langa up on his “offer”, admits Elizabeth. “But Mr Langa isn’t done – he tells her that he’ll be back for more money.”
Already onto the scent of blood from mid-May, greedy teacher Mr Manaka has been keeping tabs on his boss and who she is meeting with. “She avoids Mr Langa again [on Friday 1 June] because she is on the fence and on Monday 4 June, Mr Manaka asks Principal Thobakgale about her meetings with the investor,” explains Elizabeth. Not having learnt her lesson, the headmistress lies to Mr Manaka. “She still believes that she is going to come up with a plan that will take care of her financial problems – both at home and at school. The prob-lem is that she’s being pestered by two men who know that something isn’t adding up with the money that has clearly not been used to build the new sport complex,” explains the actress. There’s only so much stalling that she can do before both Mr Manaka and Mr Langa take action against her.
Mr Manaka notices the shady behaviour. Principal Thobakgale gets an offer from Mr Langa that she may not be allowed to refuse.
