“Don’t mistake this for teen angst,” warns Kertrice Maitisa. “Thobile is an adult. She is 23. She knows what she is doing by getting a waitressing job. It’s to rub it in her mom Moliehi’s (Vatiswa Ndara) face because Moliehi has an ego. It’s a case of ‘you are my daughter and you will not lower yourself to be a waitress.” Thobile has just returned home after a year overseas to get over her dad’s offscreen death, so coming home to a new stepdad – James (Dingaan Mokebe) – a new family and living arrangements “doesn’t sit well with her,” reveals the actress. “Thobile has always been closer to her father, so there is this gap with her mother.” And that’s a problem for controlling businesswoman Moliehi…

CONTROL QUEEN

“Moliehi likes to know what’s going on with everyone and have a hand in how they live,” explains Kertrice. “She is this way because of the hardships she had to endure in her past and Thobile working at a restaurant just isn’t on. You should’ve seen the look on Moli- ehi’s face [on Friday 18 May] when her daughter brought her her order at the restaurant! It’s priceless!” But it’s not that easy for Thobile, who took the job because it was the only work on offer after she was cut off on Friday 11 May. “Thobile being an adult and getting a job made Moliehi happy because it showed that her ‘spoilt’ daughter was growing up, but Moliehi didn’t think that Thobile would take something this beneath her,” admits Kertrice.

ODD ONE OUT

Thobile feeling out of place has something to do with her behaviour, adds the actress. “James is trying to be an almost father figure but he is walking on eggshells and Thobile also isn’t sure how to react to him in her life. James is a good man but he isn’t her dad.” Maybe a strong male figure is exactly what she needs, because life is going to get messier for Thobile thanks to a stranger who doesn’t have her best intentions in mind on Friday 25 May.

Thobile’s wild behaviour like sneaking in after a night out annoys Moliehi.
