It’s a tough pill for Mrekza (Kope Makgae) to swallow on Wednesday 10 October when he overhears his business entrepreneur girlfriend Lucy’s (Manaka Ranaka) conversation with her brother Cosmo (Ronnie Nyakale), telling him that she slept with her babydaddy Jack Mabaso ( Vusi Kunene) earlier in the month. “He is devastated,” says Kope, whose character transformed from township scoundrel to running a successful shebeen just to impress his lady love. Lucy won’t see it as clear- cut as Mrekza though – their relationship has been anything but smooth since they started fighting in April about a baby. “It’s brought out the worst of them! They’re constantly arguing and bickering, but he didn’t think that she’d ever cheat on him,” adds the actor. While Mrekza has a million questions running through his head, he isn’t the confrontational type and he considers moving out without telling Lucy. Thing is, leaving the woman he loves is going to be harder than Mrekza imagines, teases Kope.

THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG

Without discussing details, Mrekza packs his bags and heads for the door on Thursday 11 October. “He has made up his mind. It’s over and he is going to move in with his friend Mazwi (Musa Ngema),” says Kope. “Before he goes, he mentions the conversation that Lucy had with Cosmo and it’s a lightbulb moment for Lucy,” explains Manaka. Lucy tries everything imaginable to make him stay. “She begs and screams and cries, but it seems like there is no coming back from betrayal. He is done,” says the actress. “They have broken up about 10 times already, but this time feels like they’re done for good,” adds Manaka. “Having sex with Jack didn’t mean anything, it happened in the heat of the moment. She hasn’t felt attractive in a long time and all that Mrekza wants is a baby and she feels inadequate for not being able to give him one. She felt desirable and beautiful when she was with Jack, like she is a woman,” explains Manaka.

NO CHILD’S PLAY

The hardest part for Mrekza is accepting the man that Lucy chose to cheat with. “She already has a child with Jack. Their daughter Namhla (Thulisile Phongolo) might be an adult but they share something that Mrekza is envious of,” explains Kope. “Difficulties in conceiving a baby hasn’t only been hard for Lucy. It’s been a hard process for Mrekza too and he feels insecure now more than ever. He is disappointed that she chose her ex over him.” Lucy even breaks into Mazwi’s house on Friday 12 October to try to talk to Mrekza but she’s simply thrown out.

SETTLING THE SCORE

Lucy has another plan on Tuesday 16 October but it’s one that has Manaka scratching her head. “Hiring a prostitute and telling Mrekza to sleep with her to even the score? No, no, no – it’s crazy!” Mrezka refuses point blank and tells her that equalling her sin won’t fix the problems in their relationship. “He loves her. Even with this betrayal, he still love Lucy and will forgive her eventually. Until then, he needs to be on his own, away from Lucy and importantly, away from Jack before he does something silly.”

Mrekza (back) overhears his girlfriend Lucy tell her brother that she cheated on him.

Mrekza wants nothing to do with his ex.
