Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition) - - NEWS -

FORMER North West agriculture MEC Jan Serfontein is facing nine charges under the Animal Protection Act, police said yesterday.

“Nine charges have been laid (by the NSPCA) including torture and animal cruelty,” said director Daan le Grange.

Serfontein and his son, Jan jr, own one of the three biggest chicken farms in the country – Boskop Layer Chicks in Potchefstroom.

They are accused of dumping tens of thousands of male chicks in an empty farm dam and leaving them to die every week, as they were “economically worthless”.

An ex-worker, Kobus van Zyl, made videos which he gave to the TV show Carte Blanche.

No comment was obtainable from the Serfonteins’ lawyer. – Sapa
