Don’t make us drink – Muslim labourers

Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition) - - NEWS -

MANTUA, Italy: A campaign to oblige farmworkers, including Muslims observing the Ramadaan fast, to drink water during the most torrid time of the day, has sparked controversy in this northern Italian city.

The provision is contained in a document aimed at safeguarding workers’ health, officials say. Hundreds of labourers, many Muslim immigrants, are employed to pick vegetables and fruit in the Po River valley.

“Nobody can force a person to break their fast,” said a Muslim spokesman in Mantua, Ben Mansour, noting that under Italian law no one is obliged to drink water against their will. – Sapa-dpa
