Gabon fire destroys 400 shops at market
LIBREVILLE: A major fire that started overnight has destroyed about 400 shops and stalls in the main market of Gabon’s capital and firefighters were still struggling to douse it yesterday.
“I’ve lost everything. I don’t know how I’m going to eat tonight,” said shopkeeper Sambou Boussougou.
“The fire broke out at around 3am,” said Bachir Ahmed, the owner of a twostorey building that was completely burnt out. “We don’t know what the cause was.”
Firefighters were swift to arrive, witnesses said, but the absence of fire hydrants and the narrow streets made their work all the harder.
