A DRAMATIC end to the 2009 Eden Island Lipton Cup saw the final race abandoned, giving Greg Davis his fourth consecutive Lipton Cup, and keeping the trophy at the Royal Cape Yacht Club.

Davis, the defending champion, went into the final race yesterday with a substantial five-point lead after victories in all three of the previous races, but was struggling in fifth place when the race was called off.

Davis and co-skipper David Rae saw their main rival, Mark Sadler on Royal Natal’s Orion Challenger, falter in race three with a fourth place finish.

But he came back strong on the final day to lead the fleet and was agonisingly close to finishing first, but will now hold on to second overall with the eight points accumulated over the three completed races.

Fish Hoek’s Intasure produced the major surprise with skipper Andrea Giovannini steering them to third in all three races to earn third overall, just one point behind Sadler.
