Not the mayor in VIP photo

Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition) - - COMMENT - Rupert GF Toms

BIANCA COLEMAN wrote an excellent article on the cableway being 80 years old, and there was an historic picture of Their Majesties King George VI and Queen Elizabeth with General JC Smuts and the Reverend AJ Lewis, who was purported to be the mayor of Cape Town.

In fact, the mayor of Cape Town at that time, and during the visit of the royal family, was Councillor Abe Bloomberg.

I believe the royal party had been to St George’s Cathedral earlier in the day, and I assume that the Reverend AJ Lewis was connected thereto.

It would be nice to see a corrected picture in a future issue of the Cape Argus. Since the youngsters of today get little enough history, they might as well get the correct history.

ROYAL VISIT OF 1947: Britain’s King George VI, the Rev AJ Lewis, prime minister Jan Smuts and Queen Elizabeth.
