Triples victory a morale-booster for STB-VDS
THEY’VE done it again.
Stellenbosch van der Stel (STBVDS) played host to the WP Triples finals and, fittingly, came away with the men’s silverware for a second time in their brief history with victory over powerhouse club Durbanville.
Adriaan Fourie (skip), Will Esterhuizen (second) and Paul Ferns (lead), the former and latter now two-time winners, fought back from 1-9 down to secure a 17-13 win over Protea Star Shaun Addinall (skip) Brendon Allen and Alan McGowen.
Marina Brink (Gordons Bay) skipped Jenny Elliot and Mavis Scott to the women’s title with a one-sided 20-9 win over Carol Gehlig (Goodwood), Shirley Stroobants and Louise Burger (Goodwood).
Fourie’s calm demeanour was again evident as he guided his team back into contention after a sluggish start that saw them fall eight shots behind early on.
Addinall’s trio looked set for victory when they landed six shots on the fourth end, but STBVDS fought back bravely to claim a five of their own to trim back the deficit to 8-12 through 12 ends.
That seemed to spur them on in front of their home supporters, and a series of singles followed as the more fancied Durbanville ran out of steam and, more importantly, ends.
“I just want to say to my side well played,” said Fourie. “To be successful at any level you have to play as a team, and we did just that.”
STBVDS will be resetting their sights on more glory as they seek to win promotion for a fifth year running in the WP Men’s Flag competition, which kicks off today.
First Division STBVDS have been outstanding over the last five years in ascending the divisions from six to one… and now the Premier League beckons. It may not happen this year, but don’t bet against it – this is a medium-sized club with big dreams and ambitions.
The women’s final was a very ordinary encounter. Peeling at 3-3, Gordon’s Bay, having built up a 9-5 lead after 10 ends, went into overdrive over the middle ends to secure three threes and a two to put daylight between themselves and their outplayed rivals.
