Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition) - - PROPERTY -

OH, SMALLVILLE. How I wish I could quit you. After four seasons filled with plot inconsistencies, cheap resolutions, contrived character introductions and baffling character progressions, you’d think I’d have had enough.

But the show that chronicles Superman’s teen years does delivers an instalment now and then with taut storytelling, clever writing and mind-boggling twists, and I’m sucked in again.

And damn the season finales that hook you in just when you’re about to give up! We’ve had killer tornadoes, Clark giving in to his dark side, Lionel blowing Chloe up and – a second meteor shower.

But so far, so good. The writers and actors seem comfortable in their roles and the confidence boost has had a marked effect; they’ve learned the art of subtlety, adding a much-needed edge to the show. Each character has also undergone a major change and it’s reflected in the current alliances – Lex and Lana, Clark and Chloe, Martha and Lionel.

This season, Erica Durance’s Lois, below with Tom Welling, is upgraded from special guest to series regular, while a regular cast member will make an exit in the 100th episode, Reckoning, set to air in a few weeks. Chloe’s more involved now she’s in on Clark’s secret, Lois shakes things up with her attitude, Lionel may have turned good, while Lex may have finally given in to his evil side. And just wait for the season’s finale; all I’ll say is… Zod – Colin Roopnarain
