Man fa­tally shoots ‘toy-gun rob­ber’ in Lans­downe Road

A MAN who al­legedly used a toy pis­tol to rob peo­ple got more than he bar­gained for when one of his would-be vic­tims took out a real firearm and shot him dead.

Zola Jonase, 26, from Nyanga, died in Lans­downe Road.

He was ap­par­ently one of three men who were rob­bing peo­ple of their cell­phones out­side Shoprite in Philippi yes­ter­day af­ter­noon.

Po­lice spokes­woman Ntombox­olo Sit­shit­shi said the men later moved to Lans­downe Road, where Jonase al­legedly ap­proached a pedes­trian and held him up.

The man re­port­edly took out his own li­censed firearm and shot Jonase in the fore­head. The oth­ers fled. Sit­shit­shi said a toy gun and two cell­phones had been found at the scene. The man was taken in for ques­tion­ing and po­lice have opened an in­quest docket into Jonase’s death.
