Fourth person in historic picture identified

Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition) - - COMMENT - Derik Furter (Husband of one of Sir Alfred’s grandaughters)

BIANCA Coleman in her article on the 80th anniversary of the cableway, and Rupert GF Toms, whose letter was published last weekend, were both wrong about the fourth person in the picture with Their Majesties and General Smuts. It was in fact Sir Alfred Hennessy who was chairman of the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company Ltd at the time (1947).

Reverend AJ Lewis had performed the opening ceremony of the cableway in October 1929 in his capacity as the then mayor of Cape Town.

ROYAL VISIT OF 1947: Britain’s King George VI, Sir Alfred Hennessy, prime minister Jan Smuts and Queen Elizabeth.
