In the Riebeek Val­ley, Allesver- loren es­tate is the venue for a fundraiser for the Val­ley Empowerment Project, which helps vic­tims of abuse. Wine tast­ings, an art auc­tion and a gourmet lunch are on the pro­gramme for Sun­day, Novem­ber 29. The pop­u­lar­ity of the Din­ers Club Wine­maker of the Year award is ev­i­dent in the an­nual in­crease in the vol­ume of en­tries. This year caber­net sau­vi­gnon was the cat­e­gory con­tested and a judg­ing panel headed by Dave Hughes and in­clud­ing John Avery from Bris­tol sniffed, swirled, sipped and spat their way through en­tries to reach con­sen­sus: Coe­nie Sny­man is the 2009 win­ner for his 2007 Rust en Vrede caber­net, de­scribed as “deep and rich with ex­cel­lent po­ten­tial”.

When it comes to wines un­der R25, it’s dif­fi­cult to dis­tin­guish good from medi­ocre if you can­not taste be­fore buy­ing. A good rea­son for wine-lovers to di­arise Tues­day, Novem­ber 24, when the Best Value Wine Show takes place at GrandWest Casino from 5pm to 9pm. About 80 wines from 20 es­tab­lished Cape cel­lars will be there for sam­pling and pur­chas­ing, at prices start­ing at R20 and peak­ing at R60.
