Bayern Munich’s horror season goes from bad to worse
BAYERN MUNICH'S stuttering season took another turn for the worse this week when defender Philipp Lahm and Italian World Cup winner Luca Toni were fined heavily for breaches of club discipline.
Lahm, the Bayern vice-captain, was punished following a weekend newspaper interview in which he attacked the club, Dutch coach Louis van Gaal and fellow players.
A Bayern statement said Lahm's outburst had broken an “absolute taboo” and that the player had been fined an unprecedented sum, reportedly around £26,000.
Toni was fined for leaving Bayern's Allianz Arena during last Saturday's 1-1 draw against Schalke after being substituted at half-time. The club said the striker had shown “an unacceptable lack of discipline”.
The result left Bayern eighth in the Bundesliga – six points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen – while they are virtually out of the running to make the Champions League knockout stages. – The Telegraph
