The Velo­drome will be able to ac­com­mo­date 18 000 vis­i­tors com­pared to the cur­rent 8 000. It will be re­de­vel­oped to a world-class venue. We’ve en­tered into an agree­ment with Big Con­certs, South Africa’s big­gest live en­ter­tain­ment event or­gan­iser, with more than 1 000 shows un­der its belt, to man­age the fa­cil­ity. The Velo­drome will also of­fer cor­po­rate and other busi­nesses the op­por­tu­nity to hire hos­pi­tal­ity fa­cil­i­ties to host clients.

“In the fu­ture, the Velo­drome will be able to host in­ter­na­tional sport­ing events and cater for large ex­pos.”

“The ath­letic sta­dium will also be im­proved with the de­vel­op­ment of a high-per­for mance cen­tre for the de­vel­op­ment of ath­letes and sport man­age­ment, and will in­clude med­i­cal doc­tors spe­cial­is­ing in sport, bi okineti c i s t s, or t hopaedic s ur­geons, phys­io­ther­a­pists, sport psy­chol­o­gists and more.

“It will also fo­cus on the iden­ti­fi­ca­tion of SA’s fu­ture top ath­letes from pre­vi­ously dis­ad­van­taged com­mu­ni­ties and their de­vel­op­ment.

“ Our macroe­co­nomic predi c - tions are that the cu­mu­la­tive con­tri­bu­tion to the gross do­mes­tic prod­uct will be R3.8 bil­lion by 2013, and R47.7bn by 2024 (taken at 2009 val­ues) for South Africa.

“The West­ern Cape gross ge­o­graphic prod­uct will be R6bn by 2020 and 26 000 job op­por­tu­ni­ties will have been cre­ated by 2014,” says Eh­lers.
