The Velodrome will be able to accommodate 18 000 visitors compared to the current 8 000. It will be redeveloped to a world-class venue. We’ve entered into an agreement with Big Concerts, South Africa’s biggest live entertainment event organiser, with more than 1 000 shows under its belt, to manage the facility. The Velodrome will also offer corporate and other businesses the opportunity to hire hospitality facilities to host clients.

“The athletic stadium will also be improved with the development of a high-perfor mance centre for the development of athletes and sport management, and will include medical doctors specialising in sport, bi okineti c i s t s, or t hopaedic s urgeons, physiotherapists, sport psychologists and more.
“It will also focus on the identification of SA’s future top athletes from previously disadvantaged communities and their development.
“ Our macroeconomic predi c - tions are that the cumulative contribution to the gross domestic product will be R3.8 billion by 2013, and R47.7bn by 2024 (taken at 2009 values) for South Africa.
“The Western Cape gross geographic product will be R6bn by 2020 and 26 000 job opportunities will have been created by 2014,” says Ehlers.
