PERKY Pet’s headquarters, formerly established i n Plumstead, has relocated t o larger premises in Diep River.

Having opened its doors to the public this month, it is setting a precedent as the first outlet in the Western Cape offering pet supplies, an on-site vet and pet parlour, all under one roof.

“Pets provide unconditional love and companionship for people of all ages – a fact that any pet owner can testify to. We, therefore, owe it to our furry and feathered friends to take care of them in the best possible way. At Perky Pet & Vet, you can,” says owner, Harold Levitt.

A “one-stop” destination shop, the new store now operates under a new name – Perky Pet & Vet. And while a lot has changed, it continues to deliver on its promise of enhancing the well-being of all pets. “We aim to provide a wide range of premium products and accessories at competitive prices. To this end, clients also have the option of buying in bulk, which means they get to enjoy the added benefit of great cost savings on pet supplies not ordinarily found in boutique shops,” says Harold.

While there is a range of hand-reared birds and fish in-store, Perky Pet & Vet makes a point of not stocking cats and dogs as Harold believes t hi s encourages “ backstreet breeding”.

“ We’d rather that clients become involved with animal welfare organisations, such as Tears, if they are looking for a cat or dog. Early next year, we will be initiating an adopt-athon in partnership with Tears,” he says.

A signature trademark of Perky Pet is its excellent customer service and, with the increased number of employees at Perky Pet & Vet and the option of consulting with t he on site vet, Dr Paul Bernhardi and veterinary nurse Kim Clarke, clients will feel at h o me right away. Very soon they will be able to enjoy a cappuccino at the coffee bar, which will be up and running within a few weeks.

Parents, too, will be pleased to have their children kept occupied in the children’s entertainment area where Animal Planet will be t el evi s ed throughout the day.

Perky Pet has its roots as a family business and is now fourth-generation run.

The company was started in 1904, trading as Atlas Animal Feeds and, in the 1970s, the business started its first pet shop. Today, the group has pet shops in Tokai, Kenilworth, Gardens, N1 City, Table View, Sunningdale, Melkbosstrand, Tyger valley, Somerset West, Cape Gate and Rondebosch.
