Un­em­ploy­ment drops 0.2% in Ja­pan

TOKYO: Ja­pan’s job­less rate for Oc­to­ber dropped by 0.2 per cent com­pared with the pre­vi­ous month, ow­ing to ris­ing pro­duc­tion and ex­ports, the gov­ern­ment said.

Un­em­ploy­ment was down to 5.1 per­cent in Oc­to­ber, the third con­sec­u­tive monthly drop, the gov­ern­ment said in a state­ment yes­ter­day.

For ev­ery 100 job­seek­ers there were 44 open­ings, one more than in Septem­ber.

The num­ber of un­em­ployed in­creased by 890 000 peo­ple to 3.44 mil­lion year-on-year, the gov­ern­ment said. The sit­u­a­tion on the job mar­ket re­mains grave, it added.
