Lobelia can be grown year round in containers and hanging baskets, and as an edging to borders. Grow in sun or semi-shade, in composted soil with good drainage.

Cut back spray-type chrysanthemums now, followed by a second pinching back next month to encourage bushiness and more flowers.

Grow Kei apple ( Dovyalis caffra) on boundaries to provide an impe- netrable barrier. This indigenous dense shrub has spines and edible fruit that is rich in Vitamin C.

Day lilies ( Hemerocallis spp) are hardy and easy to grow. They can be massed in the landscape, planted in a border or grown in pots, with smaller varieties suitable for edging borders. New hybrids have been bred to extend the flowering season.

Attract birds to your garden by growing orange and red flowers, colours found in aloe, bottlebrush, red hot poker, protea, Strelitzia reginae and Cape honeysuckle.
