Farewell to a man of integrity

Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition) - - MEDIA & MARKETING -

WE WERE saddened to hear this week of the death of Joburg publicity man Victor Knowles, managing director and co-owner of Owlhurst Communications.

Victor passed away peacefully on January 5 after a very short, but tragic battle with cancer, the agency says.

Victor joined his wife Vanessa at the agency over a decade ago.

Owlhurst has continued to grow from strength to strength under their and their partner’s guiding hands.

Apart from being a true gentleman, Victor was known as a man of integrity and, for those who dealt with him in the media, a consummate professional. He was a skilled facilitator, putting clients and journalists in touch and then keeping to the sidelines, as a proper PR operator should do. He was never pushy with media people and allowed journalists the space to make their own decisions on material he would suggest. But, along with Vanessa, he displayed a canny news sense.

Owlhurst developed a strong client base over the years, many of whom developed a long-term relationship with the agency.

Victor and Vanessa had slowly been preparing themselves for their upcoming “semi-retirement” to the picturesque Free State village of Clarens, where they developed a number of four-star self-catering units. Even though he was winding down from the Joburg rat race, Victor still found the energy to spread the tourism message of Clarens in a professional and far-reaching way.

He will be missed and our sympathies go out to Vanessa, his family and his colleagues. –
