Taxi driver charged
THE DRIVER of a mini-bus taxi – which was shot at on New Year’s Eve while transporting Irish actress Victoria Smurfit and her family – was arrested yesterday and charged with defeating the ends of justice.
Alvin Volkwyn, 31, appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court yesterday for not disclosing that Smurfit and four family members were in the taxi at the time of the shooting.
The group were on their way to a party, when just after midnight, while the taxi was driving down Strand Street, a stray bullet shattered a passenger window and smashed into one of the vehicle’s panels.
Volkwyn appeared briefly in court yesterday. No charges were put to him and he was not asked to plead. He was released on R400 bail and warned to appear in court on February 12.
