Commend Obama for quick US aid to Haiti

Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition) - - COMMENT -

THE graphic visuals depicting the tragic loss of life with the Red Cross reporting that more 50 000 people have died following the Haiti earthquake, has shocked the world. My heart goes out to those who have lost loved ones with the death toll set to rise considerably in coming days.

It is both heartening and noble of the US to act so swiftly, commissioning a fully laden aircraft carrier with vital aid and rescue teams to alleviate the pain and suffering of the survivors in the affected disaster areas.

US President Barack Obama must be lauded for his expeditious response and furthermore for pledging R740 million to assist with relief operations. His plea to world leaders to focus on providing assistance reflects his humanitarian leadership and genuine empathy for his neighbours.
