Piglets in a poke

SYDNEY: Animal protection activists on Thursday pledged to halt a charity event in an Australian pub in which piglets race each other around a track.

“It is inherent cruelty and needs to be cancelled immediately,” People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said in a statement.

“Pigs are curious and insightful animals thought to have intelligence beyond that of an average three-year-old human child.”

But Damian McGuire, licencee of Brisbane’s Paddington Tavern, said the piglets seemed to enjoy the contests: “All the pigs run to the starting gate by themselves,” he said. “These are quite lucky pigs because they’re not ending up on the dinner table.” – Sapa-dpa
