Consumers face 18c hike in price of petrol
FEBRUARY’S petrol price increase is another blow to struggling consumers, trade union UASA said yesterday.
“UASA is concerned that the substantial increase of 18c a litre in the retail price of all grades of petrol may prove to be just one more blow to South Africa’s still struggling workers and consumers,” the union said in a statement.
The country might no longer be in recession, but relief for consumers lagged behind economic recovery, it said.
The petrol price increase announced by the energy department yesterday would have a “ripple effect” on production prices.
Consumers would have to pay more for goods at the counter while the higher petrol price was likely to contribute to a steeper inflation rate, the union said.
The price of diesel will also increase on Wednesday next week. The wholesale price of diesel will rise by 10c a litre. – Sapa
