Military snubbed MPs, says DA

Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition) - - NEWS - POLITICAL BUREAU

THE DA has accused the SA National Defence Force and Minister of Defence of “winning enemies and losing friends” by seemingly dropping parliamentary defence oversight committee members from its invitation lists.

DA defence spokesman MP David Maynier complained that MPs had again been overlooked when the South African Air Force (SAAF) celebrated its 90th anniversary at Swartkop Air Field in Pretoria yesterday.

“This is part of a pattern,” an aggrieved Maynier said yesterday. Members of this committee have not been invited to almost any key defence force function since last year.

Department of Defence spokesman Siphiwe Dlamini said “all stakeholders of the Department of Defence, including the portfolio committee, are on the guest list and would routinely be invited”.
