son would have believed don’t even exist anymore.

“And yes, sure, you know it is now and the times they are modern, but at the same moment you will feel like maybe the universe have slided backwards a decade or two and that your conscious human soul finds itself back in the golden age of the 80s. Patchleather jackets, golf ball keyrings and Kylie belting a hot one on the jukebox. If this be heaven then I don’t want to go to hell.”

Twakkie shuffles his feet and fiddles with his shorts.

“Um… What he said… What? I have to make my own answers also? Mmm. Okay. I also like that Speedway Bar. It’s very nice and you can relax a lot,” he says.

“Oh, okay, Corne says I must tell you more stuff… Um, they have a nice poster there by that place of a little dog just when you go in by the toilets. I remember that. Because I went to the toilets.

“It’s a very cute little black-andwhite puppy with these cute little droopy puppy eyes. I love dogs. Even my friend Kobus who works for the printers told me that Lassie was the most intelligentest animal ever in the whole world in a movie. And that includes ET…

“Okay. Corne just moered me because he was looking over my shoulder what I was writing.

“The Speedway Bar is also very nice because they make hamburgers and chips and beefstakes next door in the nice cheap restaurant and you can get a doggy bag. Dogs love to eat bones.

“They are full of calcium but they are a lot harder than milk. Unless you freeze it. Ouch! Guy, stop hitting me! You’re going to bruise my little face and I want to look on top for m for Up The Crank!”

Corne apologises. “I love you,” says Twakkie.

Up The Creek, as it is more accurately known, takes place on the banks of the Breede River near Swellendam next weekend from Friday to Sunday.
