Tourists pay for ‘brannas and coke’

Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition) - - NEWS -

IF YOU order in Afrikaans, you will get your brandy and Coke for R18 at Hatfield Square in Pretoria.

But speaking with a foreign accent will cost you dearly – R55 for the same drink.

Martin White, the organiser of Hatfield Square’s “month-long soccer party”, told Beeld newspaper that foreigners were charged more to fund the square’s additional security measures during the World Cup.

“If I can assure a tourist’s safety in return for him paying a higher premium on his beer, then I have done my job,” said White.

The newspaper reported that several restaurants and pubs at the Hatfield Square were charging tourists much more than locals for their drinks.
