Hospice in fundraising name row

Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition) - - NEWS - MELANIE PETERS

A ROW IS brewing between South Africa’s established hospice association and a new organisation over the use of the word “hospice”.

The Hospice Palliative Care Association has warned in a statement that its registered member hospices throughout South Africa are in no way associated with the two-monthold SA Hospice.

Association head Dr Liz Gwyther, told Weekend Argus the new body’s credentials were “uncertain”.

She said they were concerned that it had used the good name of hospice to elicit funds from an unsuspecting public, and claimed it was retaining large commissions.

But SA Hospice director Ronnie Govender said they were under the auspices of registered NGO, Ever Lasting Mercy Project.

“We are raising funds for hospices which need funding,” he said.
