Smith slams 21st cen­tury

BAS­SETERRE, St Kitts: Graeme Smith cracked his 21st Test cen­tury on the first day of the sec­ond Test against West Indies yes­ter­day.

In front of a poor crowd, Smith was un­beaten on 111 and Jac­ques Kal­lis 22 not out as the vis­i­tors reached tea on 244 for two. Smith ham­mered six fours and three sixes, two con­sec­u­tively off Nars­ingh Deonar­ine’s off spin, to put South Africa in com­plete con­trol.

Skip­per Smith and Hashim Amla (44) were given lives by a tardy West Indies field­ing side that also al­lowed the South Africans sev­eral bonus runs.

Smith was dropped by Shiv­nar­ine Chan­der­paul off Shane Shilling­ford on 79 while Amla was put down by Chris Gayle off Ke­mar Roach on 14.

The pair added 112 for the sec­ond wicket af­ter Smith and Alviro Petersen (52) had shared an open­ing stand of 99.

Shilling­ford picked up both wick­ets to fall.
