Smith slams 21st century
BASSETERRE, St Kitts: Graeme Smith cracked his 21st Test century on the first day of the second Test against West Indies yesterday.
In front of a poor crowd, Smith was unbeaten on 111 and Jacques Kallis 22 not out as the visitors reached tea on 244 for two. Smith hammered six fours and three sixes, two consecutively off Narsingh Deonarine’s off spin, to put South Africa in complete control.
Skipper Smith and Hashim Amla (44) were given lives by a tardy West Indies fielding side that also allowed the South Africans several bonus runs.
Smith was dropped by Shivnarine Chanderpaul off Shane Shillingford on 79 while Amla was put down by Chris Gayle off Kemar Roach on 14.
The pair added 112 for the second wicket after Smith and Alviro Petersen (52) had shared an opening stand of 99.
Shillingford picked up both wickets to fall.
