Fisherman missing after falling overboard
A FISHERMAN who fell overboard near St Francis Bay, in the Eastern Cape yesterday, is presumed drowned, the National Sea Rescue Institute said.
The search was called off late yesterday.
NSRI spokesman Gary Ryder said the fisherman, 20, went missing and when the crew on the chokka fishing boat, Samantha, could not find him, the NSRI was alerted. “It is believed that the man was not wearing a lifejacket and was in full fishing gear of gum-boots and oil-skins,” Ryder said.
“Sea conditions were calm with light winds and it is unknown what caused the man to go overboard.”
An extensive sea search was launched. A local businessman’s private plane helped and the SA Air Force also went on standby. – Sapa
