Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition) - - SPORT -

LIVERPOOL are intent on finalising a deal to make Roy Hodgson, pictured right, their new manager.

The Fulham boss has been working for the BBC as a pundit at the World Cup, but on his return he is expected to be offered the chance to take over from Rafael Benitez, who left earlier this month.

Kenny Dalglish had hoped to become the Reds boss for a second time, but Liverpool have decided Hodgson is the man. His first task will be to persuade Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres to stay at the club.

Germany captain Michael Ballack will retur n to Bayer Leverkusen, the Bundesliga club confir med yesterday. Leverkusen said that Ballack, 33, will receive a two-year contract until 2012.

His salary has been estimated at six million euros.

Ballack, who is sidelined with an ankle injury for the current World Cup, played in Leverkusen 1999-2002.
