Wheel­chairs for city’s beaches

THE CITY of Cape Town says it will make beach-friendly wheel­chairs avail­able at ten of its beaches this fes­tive sea­son.

“At least 3.5 per­cent of the city’s res­i­dents are dis­abled and it is im­por­tant that they en­joy easy ac­cess to Cape Town’s beau­ti­ful beaches,” it said in a state­ment yes­ter­day.

The light­weight alu­minium wheel­chairs can roll across sand, be used as beach lounge chairs, and be pushed into open wa­ter for swim­ming. The chairs will be at Clifton Fourth, Muizen­berg, Mnandi, Camps Bay, Bikini, Strand­fontein, Sil­w­er­stroom, Llan­dudno, Fish Hoek and Gor­don’s Bay un­til the end of March. – Sapa
