‘I didn’t profit from Russian ties’

Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition) - - WORLD -

KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia: Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi yesterday dismissed revelations on WikiLeaks of US worries over his ties with Moscow and repeated he had never profited personally from his contacts.

Diplomatic messages made public by the website showed US officials expressed strong concern over Berlusconi’s close relationship with Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin and its impact on foreign policy.

The messages also reported allegations by Italian opposition politicians and members of Berlusconi’s own centreright party that the prime minister and associates may have profited personally from energy deals with Russia.

Speaking in Krasnaya Polyana, Berlusconi said the leaks should not damage ties between countries. – Reuters
