First Bat­man comic with one care­ful owner sells for nearly $500 000

A RARE comic book an 84ye a r-o l d C a l i fo r n i a m a n bought for a dime when he was a teen has been sold in Texas for $492 937 (R3.465 mil­lion).

T h e c o p y o f D e t e c t ive Comics No 27 fea­tured the de­but of “The Bat­man”.

Ro b e r t I r w i n s ay s h e bought the May 1939 is­sue from a news­stand when he was 13, and it’s the only comic book he kept from his youth.

The win­ning bid came from a col­lec­tor who wished to re­main anony­mous. He placed the bid by phone in a sale by Her­itage Auc­tions in Dal­las.

Ir­win, who at­tended the auc­tion, said he was elated.

Her­itage sold a rare copy of the same comic in bet­ter con­di­tion for $1 075 500 in Fe­bru­ary. – Sapa-AP
