Auctioneer raises R11m for charity
AUCTIONEER Ariella Kuper has raised more than R11 million for various charity-based organisations during 2010, of which R3.7m has been raised in the past two months alone, according to Auction Alliance chief executive Rael Levitt.
In addition to the high-profile foundations she supports, such as former rugby Springbok captain Francois Pienaar’s Make a Difference Foundation ( M A D ) , Ku p e r h a s r a i s e d R500 000 for the Cape Leopard Trust, as well as funds for several lesser-known causes.
L a s t m o n t h , Au c t i o n Alliance maintained its 15-year tradition of raising funds for the children of Vista Nova School, which caters for those with acute special needs.
“It costs R12 000 to R15 000 per annum to accommodate just one student at the school, and R5 000 is required to purchase a walker, while wheelchairs are priced at R10 000 to R12 000 each,” says Kuper.
S h e s ay s R 1 7 5 0 0 0 w a s raised across 52 smaller-value lots at the auction. “These lots ensured that everyone who wanted to participate had an opportunity to contribute.”
A trilogy of auctions held between October 5 and Novem- ber 12 raised R2.9m for MAD, with which Auction Alliance has been associated since 2003, she says.
“MAD’s goal is to assist gifted children and provide Africa with future leaders. The funds raised will help towards the cost of providing full tuition for each student.”
The first of the three MAD auctions was held in the UK on October 5, when R1.28m was raised, and the next was an art auction of five lithographs, which generated R300 000, at the trendy iArt Gallery in Cape Town on October 14, she says.
The third was held at the Glendower Golf Course in Johannesburg on November 3, where R644 000 was raised. This event encompassed a soldout golfing day at Arabella Golf Estate, which included a round of golf, a three-course dinner and an overnight stay, raising a further R668 000, she says.
“Rugby stalwarts Toks van der Linde, Christian Stewart and Francois Pienaar added humour at the event,” adds Kuper, who elicited six-figure amounts out of various businessmen at the auction.
