War dog in tug of love

SYDNEY: Sarbi, the explosives sniffer dog that went walkabout in Afghanistan for over a year, returned to Australia on Thursday with members of her Special Operations regiment.

The 10-year-old black Labrador, the subject of a tug of love between original owner Wendy Upjohn and the defence force, was found by a US soldier in the company of an Afghan in October last year after being missing in action for almost 14 months. Sarbi ran off during a clash with Taliban insurgents.

Army chief Lieutenant General Ken Gillespie ruled Upjohn had forfeited her rights when she donated the dog for national service and that Sarbi was to live with her handler on her retirement in two years’ time. – Sapa-dpa
